The Fresnel lens dates back to 1856. President John Quincy Adams approved the lighthouse to be built in 1824. The lighthouse was automated in 1989, but the Coast Guard personnel continue to use the keeper's dwelling as a residence. In 2007, the Coast Guard leased the tower to the American Lighthouse Foundation, which has proved to be a capable caretaker and saw to an extensive renovation of the tower. Tourists visit the 1854 Keepers Quarter Museum which features exhibits on Owls Head Light. Stop by the Gift Ship where you find unique lighthouse and nautical gifts and apparel. The stairs are a climb to the lighthouse, but has spectacular views of the entrance to Rockland Harbor in Knox County, Maine. The national park grounds are open year round.
